You see in this video that the closer I stand towards the golf ball, I can keep my ball’s loft off the clubface. This allows me to have the ball travel relatively low as it heads towards impact.

The closer I stand next to it, my hands are permanently forward, which allows my ball to travel with power, but at a lower, faster angle.

It’s no secret that golf has become an over-complicated game for players and coaches alike, you only need to do a quick search online for golf backswing tips and you will be bombarded with, one plane and two plane golf swings, training aids, DVD’s and equipment that promises to give you the “Perfect Golf Swing“.

  1. I remember this was one of the things my coach got me to do when I was learning (minus the gripping down). Standing a little closer to the ball than I naturally wanted to do made me feel a bit cramped up, but the strikes were really solid and the swing felt effortless. I’m not sure, but I think it made me rotate rather than just swing my arms. Whatever it did, it worked. Thanks for the reminder!

  2. What distance do you normally hit 5 iron with regular stance? Have you gripped down an inch and stood a couple of inches closer? Thanks!
