Johan Moberg became the World Hickory Golf Champion in the annual contest that celebrates the heritage of the game.
In a nutshell, Hickory Golf is played with original or pre-1936 replica hickory shafted clubs and yet skillful players such as last year’s winner and former Masters Champion Sandy Lyle are still able to hit their drives close to 300-yards yards and record scores of as little as 67, although this has only been achieved twice in the tournaments 12-year history.
Most of the entrants play in traditional early 20th century attire
with a thin, leather bag slung over their shoulder, each bag
rattling a cleek, mashie and several other pre-1936 wooden golf
clubs. The skill is finding the rhythm and balance to play your
stroke with force and accuracy.
